Podcasting terminology 

 

Podcast is both noun and a verb. It refers to the new medium that this presentation is about ;-)

As a noun it can refer to the content in an episode. An episode contains a digital audio file. Content varies wildly. If you can think or talk about it, it can be the subject of a podcast.

As a verb it can refer to the action of sending the episodes content out through syndication

Podcasting started to become popular in 2004 and now is becoming very widespread

 

Feed is a file that contains a snippet of XML code that tells a reader or aggregator how to subscribe to that particular podcast

 

RSS stands for really simple syndication. It is a format for feeds.

 

XML is the extensible markup language

 

Aggregator is a tool that knows how to “grab” feeds from various content providers. It can be browser-based or a program that is installed on a computer.

 

Vodcast is a video podcast.

 

iPod is a portable media player produced by Apple that can play digital audio files and store digital content. Some models can play digital video files, too. It is only one device that can play podcasts.

 

Mp3 is the most common type of podcast digital audio file. It is a filetype that uses compression, so it makes files smaller and easier to download. It can be played on most every computer.

 

Mp3 player is a type of portable media player that knows how to play mp3 files.

 

Sync or synch is short for synchronizing. You can “synch” your portable media player by connecting it to another computer (or similar machine) and download digital content so that both machines have the same content.

 

iTunes is the free Apple software that iTunes subscribers use to download songs, movies, tv shows, audiobooks, podcasts and vodcasts. It does not use mp3 files, but a proprietary file format.

 

Juice is a Free Podcast receiver. You can subscribe to podcasts, receive them, and listen to them on your computer or portable player. You can set a schedule for Juice to check for new episodes and download for you or do it yourself.   http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/
